Since the bassoon does not merely have an accompanying function but is put on a par with the oboe as an independent, contrapuntal part, we here have an early example of a duet-sonata which discloses virtuoso passages amazing for the times."

Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum (Psalm 127) , for Soprano (Tenor), Oboe and Basso continuo, K Janetzky.
The psalm text of the solo motet Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum was widely popular and used in a variety of settings. In his C-minor setting of 1723, Heinichen enhanced the text with a formally well-rounded composition full of delightful sonorities, yet utterly faithful to its serious intent. Contrary to his setting of the same text in G minor (probably earlier, and completely autonomous) for soprano, bass, obbligato oboe and small orchestra, Heinichen expressly leaves the choice of soloist – either soprano or tenor – to the performers, and adds a chamber-style concertante oboe to the inevitable general bass. Following the practice of the time, it is perfectly plausible to replace the oboe with a flute or violin. The likeliest continuo instrument is the organ or portative. However, a chamber registration would also suit the piece in a larger hall. When using a harpsichord, one should be aware that longer notes in the continuo realization are to be broken down into shorter note values. The execution depends on the continuo player's taste and habits, particularly since the printed realizations should only be considered as a one of many possible ways of interpreting the continuo. It should not stifle or suppress the element of improvisation. The ornaments offer a broad domain for spontaneous music making. This edition, which offers the editor's suggested realizations of only the most important embellishments, gives the performer a wide scope to introduce ornaments according to his stylistic understanding and technical proficiency. Of course, it should be warned against burdening the melody with too many ornaments, or against executing the piece all too soberly and dryly. It is essential to have an appropiate bass instrument (bassoon, violincello, viola da gamba) even when there is an organ with strong bass registers to hand. The continuo realization has been prepared according to the guidelines given by Heinichen himself in hs Der General Bass in der Composition (1728) . Our special thanks go out to the Sachsische Landesbibliothek, Dresden for granting permission to print the work for the first time, and to the director of its musical division, Dr. Wolfgang Reich, for courteously supplying us with much profitable advice.

This is the actual edtion used in Clas Pehrsson's recording on BIS
This Concerto a 8' has the unusual scoring of flauto concertato, 3 flauti ripieni, 2 violins, viola and cembalo. The score is in Graupner's hand-writing (he was a school friend of Heinichen) and is in the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek, Darmstadt (D DS Mus. 240/3) . The bass part is unfigured. A performance without keyboard i.e. with strings only is therefore possible throughout. The recorder parts were originally written in the french violin clef. The second and third ripieni recorders have been exchanged in the last movement, thus correcting the error in the source.
The present study edition of this work, for four recorders and keyboard, will enable music lovers to become familiar with this concerto by Heinichen. The keyboard part is a short score of the string parts with the realisation of the bass part included in the appropriate places. In other respects there are almost no differences from the original; dynamic indications in the last movement are taken from the original.
For performance with orchestra, a score and parts of this concerto can be obtained separately.

The Bibliothèque du Conservatoire Royal de Musique, Brussels owns a miscellany volume with the number Litt X.Y. 15 115 which includes (pp.155-157) the score of an Oboe Sonata by Johann David Heinichen, entitled:
Sonata XXXIII a Hautbois Solo et Basso Continuo par Monsr. Heinichen
Seibel 265 and Hausswald III,5.
The autograph has not been located, and the date of composition is uncertain. Presumably, the piece was written for one of the virtuoso oboists who were at Heinichen's disposal when he was Kapell-meister at the court of August der Starke in Dresden (1717 - 1729) . This first edition follows the only known source closely. With the exception of a very few copying errors, no changes have been made, although modern notation is used. The added baroque ornamentations and phrasings are to be understood as only one of many possibilities. The solo part - – which can also be played by a flute or violin should be accompanied by a harpsichord with the support of a bassoon or viola da gamba or cello. Kurt Janetzky

An unknown transcriber wrote very conscientiously and almost without errors the score which served the basis for this first edition. It is named
Sonata a 3. Hautbois 1. Hautbois 2. con Bassoon pars Mons Heinichen
Consequently it is a Trio Sonata composed in the typically German manner, expressly meant for oboe and bassoon.
The way of score writing at that time demanded that without special explanation and despite no indication of a bass line another instrument had to accompany in chords the small wind ensemble and tonally to direct it. Therefore a continuo phrase has been added here to the socre (to be recognized as an addition by its small print) which Erhard Franke has arranged according to the General Bass Directory and prepared for cembalo.
This is to be understood as a suggestion which may be modified to suit acoustical conditions and may also serve as guidance and direction for the stylistically admissable participation of harp, theorbo and lute.
A modern piano with its unjustifiably heavy tone should, however, be avoided, as this would drown out the woodwinds.
According to the musical practice of olden times and also of today one can of course also use other solo instruments (for instance 2 flutes and one viola da gamba) .
Also a suitable combination of string (2 Violins and violoncello) and wind instrumentsis technically permissible without affecting thereby the character of the composition. But naturally preference should be given to the original concept with oboes and bassoon.
The edition itself sticks strictly to the mentioned outline. Only a few additions (in brackets) have been added as onobligatory suggestions. Obsolete connotation methods have been changed to the modern form of writing.

Editors Note
"This edition of Hasse's Laudate Coeli Dominum is based upon a hand-copied score) by an unknown copyist - although a former owner of this copy, written around 1800, was Schicht, possibly of Hamburg) located in the Musikabteilung of the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in West Berlin, Mus Ms 9515/2 (the old catalogue number being part:460) . The score measuring 24 X 32 cm, is set over sixteen pages, with thirteen staves in the first movement and from seven to thirteen staves in the second movement, with the parts in the following order: clarino 1, clarino 2, timpani, oboe 1, oboe 2, violin 1, violin 2, viola, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, cello and bass. The location of the autograph score is unknown."
Within the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church, the text of the Laudate Coeli Dominum is taken from the following sources:
"In preparing this performing edition, instrumental parts were completely written out where the copyist indicates col viol for the oboes or second violin; slurs were added in all parts for the sake of consistency where only one part was so noted; the timpani part was written up a whole step to agree with the actual pitches being played; text, where shown in only one voice, was written out for all vocal parts, with slurs added where two of more notes appeared for a single syllable of text; soprano, alto and tenor parts, notated in moveable clefs, were rewritten in treble clef. All editorial markings are in parentheses."

Lotti's collection of 12 duets, four trios, and two madrigals, published in 1705, brought him fame but also involved him in controversy. An anonymous writer, probably Benedetto Marcello, issued a pamphlet that severely criticized Lotti's collection. In London some claimed that G. B. Bononcini, and not Lotti, had composed the final madrigal in the collection. Lotti, angered by this, gathered sworn statements from witnesses to support his authorship of the madrigal. Most of these charming pieces about love and the lessons of love have not been published in a modern edition.
