Mertz is an almost unknown figure in the German Romantic firmament but his contributions to the guitar medium are definitely of crucial importance. This well filled disc contains an intriguing and interesting traversal of several items which definitely serve to uphold this reputation.
The items recorded here are distinctly numerous but one need only listen to the opening 'Barcarole' to note a certain elegance of construction and beauty that is well expostulated by the inspired partnership of Prunnbauer and Tappert. Throughout, both artists exhibit an intensive rapport that is further amplified by their skilful use of the historical guitar that adds allure and panache to the proceedings.
This is easygoing, relaxing music that falls very easily on the ear especially the grand fantasy titled, 'La Rage' or the exotically tempered 'Tarantelle' and 'Mazurka'. Copious notes are provided and the recording is ideally shaped to provide the best possible listening experience.
