Decca is doing baroque and early music collectors a brilliant service by the reissue of a host of L'Oiseau-Lyre recordings that have not even ever been reissued on CD. This thrilling disc of works by Georg Muffat is a case in point, music of wonderful invention and beautiful harmony in what can only be termed as succinctly authoritative performances by the Academy of Ancient Music under their mentor Christopher Hogwood.

Muffat's "Florilegium Secundum" is one of the masterpieces of the early baroque era and here we have four suites, Fasciculus 1-4 each with their own particular chorus of strings and splendidly effective sounds.

A particularly effective part of these reissues is the booklet note which usually dwells on the circumstances and history surrounding the nature of the recording in question. Lindsay Kemp is a master at recreating that era of thrilling discovery and innovation when period instruments were gaining their first real footholds in the mid 1970's through to the early 1980's. At 48 minutes, the disc is not long but at mid-price and which such splendid music, you just have to acquire it. And then there's always that repeat button on the player….
