After devoting a large number of discs to the genial and inventive music of Janis Ivanovs, Campion now turn their attention to Vyachesłav Grokhovsky (b.1945), a Russian composer of some repute who is well represented in the light music field.
One of the most representative works on this disc is the recording of 'The Echanted Wanderer', a tone poem that fuses together Rachmaninoff, Stravinksy and Prokofieff but which also reveals some of Grokhovsky's characteristics in the melodious string writing. I also enjoyed the sprightly 'Russian Caprice' and the delightful suite on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales.
The recording hails from a 1996 Aquarius disc and has come up trumps in this new transfer. This is recommended to any lover of good orchestral music and with the composer conducting, I'm sure that the pieces could hardly have been done better.
