A listen throughout this delightful disc cannot fail to raise your spirits, such is the tuneful evocacy of Grétry's music. With tambourines and percussion in "Céphale et Procris' and the wind machines in "Le Jugement de Midas', one can sit back and relax as if watching a collection of paintings by Boucher and Fragonard. Sanderling and his excellent Bretagne Orchestra bring out the various hues and shades of these slight but charming works and add to the fantasy and imagery of the already very pictorial music. Beecham's edition of "Zémire et Azor could prove to be the best piece although I was certainly charmed by the overtures to "Silvain', "Guillaume Tell' and "Le Huron', all excellent pieces in their own right. AS&V's crystal clear recording and entertaining documentation set the seal on a colourful and highly enjoyable issue.
